This book consists of nine chapters, one appendix and a bibliography and index.The chapters include an overview of shotgun acquisition state by state, Confederate ordnance alterations to shotguns for mounted and dismounted use, Southern agent marked shotguns, shotgun bayonets, shotgun ammunition, shotgun accouterments, a selection of period images of Confederate soldiers armed with shotguns, post war agent marked shotguns and living history units using shotguns and modern reproductions.
A number of institutions furnished photographs of shotguns in their collections. Private collections furnished the bulk of the examples of shotguns illustrated in the book. The Library of Congress and the United States Army Heritage & Education Center along with other facilities provided a number of period images.
