W.C. Smith, III


W.C. Smith, III is a native son of the south with ancestry in South Carolina and North Carolina going back over 300 years. Born in Sumter, South Carolina and growing up in Cayce, South Carolina, he developed his love of history as a result of his childhood conversations with his grandfather combined with the influence of the Civil War centennial. W.C. began collecting War Between the States memorabilia as a teenager and now focuses his collecting interests on South Carolina related confederate items and World War II identified United States related items.

W.C. graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1977 with a degree in Accounting. After a career in state government, having worked for the South Carolina Department of Insurance and the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Commission, he retired in June of 2017.

W.C. has served as a volunteer consultant to the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, South Carolina State Museum, Fairfield County Museum, and Lexington County Museum. He has been a life member of the National Rifle Association, the Company of Military Historians, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Military Order of Stars and Bars. W.C. was an active member of a Civil War living history organization during the war’s 125th anniversary battle reenactments. In the past W.C. has contributed to several books and publications on the War Between the States and historical artifacts.

Today W.C. enjoys doing historical and genealogical research. He currently lives in Lexington, South Carolina with his wife Lynn and enjoys spending time with his two daughters, their husbands, and his four grandchildren.
